Birmingham APA'S
SCOTCH DOUBLES
VEGAS QUALIFIERS (VQs) TOURNEYS
Birmingham APA
provides a number of ways for players to earn an opportunity to play in Las Vegas. Besides the slots that we receive for our open 8-Ball and 9-Ball teams, we also get Vegas slots for
Masters
,
8-Ball Scotch Doubles
,
9-Ball Scotch Doubles
, and
Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles
. Scotch Doubles is also know as
Shape Partners
in our area. This means that team members will alternate every shot and play each other's shape. This is one of the fairest formats for "partner" pool.
At times, we will have 8-Ball and 9-Ball Scotch Doubles divisions in which teams can earn one of these Vegas slots. When these divisions are available, information on these divisions can be found on our left menu under "
Local APA Divisions
". We also have special tournaments called
Vegas Qualifiers
in which teams can compete to try and win one of these Vegas slots. Our local tournament rules and requirements are very similar for
8-Ball Scotch Doubles
,
9-Ball Scotch Doubles
, and
Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles
. The exception is that
Jack & Jill
teams must be made up of a
guy
and a
girl
. Here is a link to to the rules for these 3 tournaments:
Scotch Doubles-VQ Tourney Rules
As seen in our rules, the total skill level of teams that compete in these 3 tournaments can only add up to
10 points or less
. If a team wins a Vegas spot and then their individual skill levels increase during regular league play, the team will still be allowed to compete if their total skill level stays
12 points or under
. If their Skill Level increases to
13
, a replacement of one or both players will have to be made to reduce the team skill level back to 10.
The match race for each team depends on the total points of that team and is determined by the below

Each year, we usually host at least one,
Masters Scotch Doubles-VQ Tourney
. This tourney was created for the "BIG DOGS" in our league. To participate, players must be an 8-Ball skill level
6
or
7
and teams' total points can be from
13 to 14 points
. The winning team in these highly competitive tourneys earn a spot at the
APA Masters Championship
held in August
in Las Vegas and some prize money for travel assistance. They will also get to choose 1 to 2 other "Masters" to make up the 4 man team that they will need in Vegas. Here is a link for the rules and requirements of our
